Any novel reccomendations to improve high school essay writing?

Or, methods of how to improve essay writing, because i'm in the 12th grade, and most of the assignments are essays, and when I enter University, it will be much harder, so i am hoping to improve.

Select what you want to prove in your essay:

-Boo Radley is the mockingbird that it was a sin to kill
-State's rights more than slavery led to the Civil War
-Picasso's "blue period" demonstrated a major shift in his methods and messages

Then select three or four examples of how you will prove your thesis. Then devote one FULL paragraph to EACH of your evidences. Refer to your evidences in your opening paragraph and then address each one IN DETAIL with many examples to support your claim. each paragraph should ONLY talk about THAT claim. You can three, four, or sometimes five points to discuss. Then in your final (concluding) paragraph summarize what you proved in your essay.

Simply put:

Tell them what you're going to tell them
Tell them
Tell them what you told them

If more students followed those simple steps there would be a world filled with better writers.

Good luck.

I want to assign one essay a week to my ESL student and then discuss it with her the following week in class. The length of the essay should be about 3-4 pages, ideally. Thanks for any help.

Should essay writing be included in the high school maths syllabus?

Are you for or against making essay writing part of the mathematics curriculum?

Grades 1 - 12 have classes in both math and English. I don't think you need to blend that at this point. In general, it's safe to say anyone possessing grade 12 math or lower probably won't be writing too many scientific papers on the subject, or won't be writing them to an audience that requires specific techniques for writing a high quality scientific. In the few cases where this is untrue, they'll have to pick up a book on scientific writing, like David Porush's "A Short Guide to Writing about Science.

Once you get to graduate and post-graduate school I think it's important for mathematicians and other scientists to have a formal education in writing for the sciences. At that point, they've decided that working in the sciences is their career, and they should learn to write in the form dictated to their career. There is sufficient material on writing for the sciences to make an entire course (or two or three) dedicated to the topic.

So while I find writing in the sciences, including math, to be important, I do not think it should be lumped in with any specific course's other material (especially in high school,) and should be offered as an option of its own.
