I’m a prospective transfer student. I have been going to a four year college (Texas State) and I am applying for transfer to another four year college (The University of Texas at Austin). I am supposed to write two essays for my application of admission: a statement of purpose and one about an issue that is important to me. I understand the basic structure of an essay, I need an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. I am already at two full pages, double spaced, on the first essay and I’m wondering how long (or short) should I go????

I wouldn’t go over 1000 words per essay just to make sure it all gets read. After four pages a reader will often lose interest.

I am writing an essay on the challenges that I will face going back to school for higher education. My 3 focal points are: Adjusting to the extra responsibility of higher education compared to highschool, getting to know others on campus, and helping my family adjust to my school responsibility. Please help me word this first paragraph. I have been working on it forever and it just doesn't sound right. I would love to hear some other thoughts on this, thanks so much!

You have it pretty much written.
"The challenges I know I will face when I return to school for higher education are blah blah blah."

Your paragraphs following the opening will support those three challenges. Your opening paragraph should be a synopsis of the paper's content. Your ending is much the same and could be along the lines of "Based on these premises, I realize returning to school will be hard on me, on my family, and quite possibly on the other students. I also feel it will all be worth it in the long run." or something like that.

It seems to me like I can’t just randomly stick a quote from a play into a paragraph as one sentence and then describe it. I think there should be a way to ease in the quote into the essay.

basically, set up what you're talking about, then stick in the quote you will use to support it (eg "For example, as _____ says in the novel _____"), interpret what the quote is saying that makes it a good quote to stick there (eg 'he is talking about how losing his mother has had a profound impact on his life, to the extent he has taken up drugs and is considering suicide'), and then link it back to the main point you're making (eg 'this is a good example of grief and drug addiction linking to suicidal themes in the novel ____ ')

If anyone was accepted into this program or has insightful ideas and tips to help me, then I will humbly appreciate it.

I am very eager to participate in the summer classes. But I have no idea where to begin in the essay. What do I write about? Just my achievements? How do I link together the political issue with the rest of my essay?
