The other day my teacher had gave us 40 minutes to write an essay.
All of us were handed random topics. Mine was “What is an important rule everyone should live by?”
Unfortunatley I don’t think I did so well.
My mind was so focused on the time. I was sitting there jotting every little idea down while trying to make the paragraph come together and make sense, etc etc.
How can I improve this? I can’t believe that happened to me. I’m a fairly intelligent person, so this is a little bit of a shock.
Read lots, like autobiographies of Great people like Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Mahathma Gandhi and successful people like Bill Gates etc. U can get the views on life. Practice Yoga, it increases your concentration and power to think. Good Luck.

Try to organize your thoughts and use a conversational style when you are writing. Have a main idea and then make your backup points to go along with it, add much detail. Write about what you know and the rest will follow. Enjoy writing and realize it is about your life and your interests, make your essay into that and it will be great. Do not think of it as a chore, but as fun, because it is since you get to express yourself. Have a new paragraph for each time the subject changes. Have several sentences per paragraph. Read more and your writing will improve. Also keep a journal and write a lot. That will help a lot. Read your teacher’s comments always and vow to improve. If you want to you will. Enjoy.

Trevor has a good answer.
Read more books or essays in general. The more you read, no matter what it is, the more you’ll see and understand how sentences and paragraphs go together and make good stories.

Point, quote, analysis.
Make your point, back it up with a quote and analyze/round off your point. Before you start an essay jot down five or six key points you want to make and then start working on them with the PQA method. If you have 40 minutes spend 5 minutes picking out your 3 key points (if you only have 40 minutes you won't be expected to make any more points than that) then spend 10 minutes on each point and the the last 5 minutes rounding off your essay and drawing a conclusion.
Always keep referring back to the question and always keep your quotations short and to the point. Try and give a balanced view, look at both sides of things and then give your opinion at the end. Also try to limit your use of "I" in an essay. Xx
